“One of the much-discussed effects of the current, global political climate is the weaponization of the fear and hate that underpins our administration and social and cultural institutions. American leadership, among other Western colonial entities, has purchased its passage on our haste to protect ourselves, our families, and our property. One consequence of that exploitation is that we neglect to remember that we are human, and that behind every fictionalized other is a living, breathing life struggling to thrive. We forget that for every invisible monster, every invisible figurehead, there is a deeply personal story.
Three weeks prior to completing this project, my life was in an acute state of flux. I had been working as a freelance designer (aka: functionally unemployed) and was freshly split with my spouse and partner of 16 years. I was sheltering under the generosity of friends while I sought a more permanent solution for housing, and it was in that transition from spare bed to spare bed that my car was stolen. To the police, it was just a number on a ticket… another statistic casualty of a swelling, choking city with increasingly inadequate resources. But to me, that car was a safe space. A thinking place, and at that time, a storage space - where I kept the articles of identification, sentiment, and confidence that would sustain and console me until my feet found solid ground again. In an instant, everything was gone, and not by accident. ”
